Have you ever done something or said something in the past that you wish you could undo? I am sure as much as this is true for me, the same is true for you? It might have resulted in missed opportunities, broken relationships and unnecessary heartache. Consequences that left a scar on your identity and the way you think about yourself. It might even be so deeply engraved into your soul that you cannot see a way beyond it. Do not be discouraged, all hope is not lost!
Nothing we do or say is so big and can have so much power that Jesus cannot sweep it from the display of our lives. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” (NIV)
The day we accept Jesus as our Lord and Saviour, we become established in Him. Whoever we thought we were are gone, there is a new hope in us! Jesus has cleansed our name before God. When God now looks at us, He sees us as cleansed and righteous in Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:21). Nothing we have done can disqualify us anymore, it has been erased from the records of our lives as far as God is concerned. Jesus suffered for every wrong we have ever done or will still do and His blood that was shed at the cross for us has covered all our past mistakes and any wrong we will still do. He has given us a clean slate in His name. We have literally and figuratively become a new person in Him. We may not be able to undo the damage we caused in our past, but it can no longer have any power over us, unless we allow it by hanging it as the curtain over our thoughts.
When we take our step of faith in Christ, He renews everything in us—our minds, our souls, our hearts, our bodies and spirits. It is our choice whether we are going to accept it or not. It is a journey each of us has to walk with Christ. Every day, the more we understand of what He has done for us and receive it as a truth for ourselves, the more we will start to see the evidence thereof in our lives.
Your past has been buried at the cross and now there is no condemnation for you in Christ (Romans 8:1). As you choose a life apart from all the desires of your flesh and seek God’s will for your life, you are strengthened in the truth of who you really are in Christ. It is an identity that is already yours, the question is, “Have you received it?”
Therein lies a new hope for your future and the key to lock the door to the hurts of your past.
