Saving your mouth

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits. Proverbs 18:21 ESV

Do our words have power?

Let’s look at the example of a father’s words towards his child. In the one case the father tells the child how much he loves him and how proud he is of him, not because he has done something, but just because he is his child. He often embraces his child and says, “You are my beloved child”. When we compare that with a father who never has anything good to say to his child. He always reminds him how disappointing he is and that he is never good enough—he will never amount to anything.

In the first instance the child will know who and what he is. He does not have to work to earn his father’s love because he is already loved, apart from his actions. He will have the security to go out in the world and be himself and be open for the love of God because he has had a similar example through his father. He knows love.

In the second instance, the child will always feel not good enough, he will not know who he truly is accept the failure in his father’s eyes. His whole life he will search for who he is.  He might look for himself in the opinions of others or maybe through his performances. He may have difficulty understanding the love of God because he never experienced unconditional love from his own father.

Our words have the power to bless or hurt ourselves or others.

We might not always realize it but every word we speak whether it is over ourselves or over someone else, it has the potential to determine an outcome. If you only take one day in your life and you look at the words you have spoken, have they been life or death, blessings or curses?

Many times in my own life I would find myself saying things about myself and sometimes other people which is not positive. I might be talking about someone not with the intention to talk bad about them but just by the way I have portrayed them, I have put them in a bad light. I might have been talking about myself and selling myself short in many areas. We sometimes think we are humble by talking down on ourselves, but all we are truly doing is telling God He has not done a good enough job in creating us, which is of course a lie.

God created the world through the words He spoke. He spoke a word and it came to life, because there was power in His words, the same power we have in our words as the Holy Spirit of God now lives in us. (1 John 2:20)

Romans 4:17 says, “As it is written, I have made you the father of many nations. (He appointed our father) in the sight of God in Whom he believed, Who gives life to the dead and speaks of the nonexistent things that (He has foretold and promised) as if they (already) existed.

Our words have the power to determine our future. When we declare a promise over our lives that God gives us in His word, we are speaking forth which is not yet visible to the human eye as though it already happened. And as we stand in faith, it will come to pass. It works the same about anything we speak over our lives.

What do you speak over your life?

When we change the way we talk we make ourselves a lot happier. Are we saying what God says about us in His word or are we just saying whatever we feel like saying? We have a choice to make. God equips us through His word for every situation we might be facing in life. When we get in agreement with God about every situation we face, we would be staying there a lot shorter than we often do and we will be stepping out in blessings we never thought possible. When you are going through a difficult time declare, “God turns everything for my good because I love Him and I have been called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28). When you are having financial difficulty declare, “And my God supply all my needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19). When you are sick and can see no breakthrough declare, “By Jesus stripes I am healed” (Isaiah 53:3-5). When you are weak and do not feel good enough to do what is required of you declare, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13). When you are afraid declare, “God has not given me a spirit of fear but of power, love and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7). When you feel unrighteousness because of something you have done wrong declare, “I am the righteousness of God in Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:21). The Bible is full of promises and truths for us to declare and speak over our lives.

If you had only 1000 words left to speak before your life ends and for as long as you speak life, the number of words you have remains, but every time you say something negative, the number of words become less. How much time will you have left?

Our words have power, more than what we are able to handle by ourselves. We need the help and guidance of the Holy Spirit. Let’s start trusting God to start saving our mouths so that we can become a voice for God with every word we speak.
