We are all making decisions every day, some more important than others. For some of those decisions we do not need to think twice about making the right choice, but for others it might be a whole different story.
Today, I want to ask you that when it comes to those big, and more often than not, difficult decisions, “Who are making them for you?”
I am sure that when your decision involves something that could change the course of your life, you are going to take your time and think it through carefully. You might even consult a few people’s opinions. You might consider praying and fasting about it but then, eventually the time will come when you have to make up your mind.
I think it is right to consult others when you have to make a big decision, the Bible even says in the Book of Proverbs that there is wisdom in the counsel of many, but at the end of the day it is still you who have to make the final call and God’s peace will guide you.
God also speaks to you personally and when it comes to making decisons, He wants to be your guidance. Sometimes He may do it through people or circumstances and that will confirm what you already know on the inside. When you make that final decision it should come from within and God’s peace or the absence thereof will tell you what the right answer is.
Just as much as others’ opinions can bring you good perspective, so it can also prevent you from making the right choice. What is right for you might not be right for me. What makes perfect sense to me might not make sense to you at all.
In fact, having observed many lives and the courses they have taken, including my own life, I have realised that what is right for me, will most probably make no sense to you and will be an absolute wrong if you were to do that as God’s plan for my life will differ from yours. That makes it daunting but also fascinating at the same time.
It is easy to make a big decision if you will know that others will support you in it and if it lines up with their opinions. But just as much as it can make you make a decision, it can also prevent you from making the right decision.
What am I actually saying?
You see, if I have a difficult decision to make and I am not entirely sure what to do, I will seek advice. Some of it will sound good and indicate the way I should go as well as what is more of less expected of someone in my position, but still I will have no peace about it. It might even agree with what I think the right answer is, but I know sometng is not right about it.
When I then go and truly seek an answer from God and it turns out to be the opposite of the advice I got, it may impact the decision I make. I could either go with what is expected to be the right choice, even though I know it is not right for me, or I could follow that small Voice on the inside and do what I know is right, even though it may make little sense. Others opinions or their reactions to your decisions could influence you and ultimately lead you to making the wrong one. Do you allow that to happen?
Remember, the Bible never says that making the right decision will be easy, but when we follow Wisdom, we will succeed in making the right choice, no matter the circumstances. At the end of the day we can make our plans and do what we feel is right (and in the process even ignore the red lights along the road), but God will have the final say.
Let’s do ourselves a favor and sacrifice people’s approval now and make the “God-right” kind of decisions that gives us lasting joy, than enjoying people’s approval for now but holding off on God’s joy for us. A delay that could cause us more harm than good.
Let “God in you” flow through your decisons, in spite of what people may say or do. He already knows the outcome.
