Imagine yourself standing in a dark room, all alone; what would be the first words you speak?

I can only speak for myself and they would probably be: “It is so dark.”

Would yours be any different?

This is the very same situation that God faced before He created the heaven and the earth…

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. (Genesis 1:1-2 NIV)

And what were His words…

…”Let there be light.” And there was light. (verse 3)

He did not say what He saw, but He said what He wanted to see. He was not in denial of the facts in front of Him, but He knew the power of His words and the ability they had to change a situation once they were spoken, and so He did.

As believers in Christ, we have that same power in the words we speak. Do you speak of your trails and challenges or do you speak to them? It is easy to speak of the sadness we see around us, the unfairness we face, the height of the mountains we need to climb, but it becomes a different story if we begin to speak of what we want to see. This takes a step of faith, all God needs from us to begin His power working and through our lives because without faith it is impossible to please Him (Hebrews 11:6).

A sickness may be the thief of your days, but in that moment when you become quiet before Jesus, how about you stop complaining about it and start praising Him and thanking Him for His heart to heal you? A loved one may have gone astray but instead of being drowned in the endless pit of heartache and maybe even regret, what if you hold onto the promise that you and your family will serve the Lord? When a breakthrough is just not happening, instead of dwelling on all the reasons why it may not be happening, continue to speak God’s promises of provision and favour over your life and wait on His timing. He is never early but always late on timing. When it feels like you are just getting by, do not get caught up in the reality of your shortcomings but remind God of His promise to provide in your every need.

God has given you His authority and power through your words. Choose to use them in a way that will bring light, no matter how dark your reality may seem (Proverbs 18:21). Do not give more reason for you to stay longer in the trial you are in but create a pathway through with your words for God to bring new hope and a turnaround, no matter what you are facing.

I want to encourage you to look at the darkness you may be facing and remind God of the light only He can bring into your situation.
